Why is diversity sensibility and critique of social inequality necessary? What does research show?
The Graz University diversity management is based on research. This research is carried out in numerous fields of research and revolves, for example, around discrimination, diversity, gender, equality, stereotypes, intersectionality, prejudice, violence and power.
Stereotypes are simplified and solidified images used to characterize and typify certain groups, while prejudices are generalised judgements about people (groups) based on stereotypes. Our unreflected assumptions become problematic when they deepen inequalities, for example when certain positive or negative character traits or abilities are inferred on the basis of an (attributed) characteristic of a person (e.g. age, gender etc.) and our actions are subsequently guided by such attributions. Then stereotypes and prejudices can be the basis for individual discrimination, which is intentionally or unconsciously carried out by individual actors. The driving force is the personal attitude or action of the discriminating person. Institutional and structural discrimination can also occur. Discrimination is unjustified unequal treatment which not only affects different levels (individual, institution, social structure) but can also manifest itself in different ways (indirectly, directly).
